About David

self-portraitThank you for visiting my website. It’s gone through several iterations since its creation. Now, I’m dedicating this site to photography and some images I’ve captured over the years. I’ll show many photos from my studies at Cal State Fullerton, through my time as a community photographer at the Orange County Register. I’ll also display some “vacation” photos when I traveled to see my favorite band in Europe, and later in Japan. And I’ll post pictures I’ve taken since my photojournalism days.
Working as a photojournalist provided me a variety of unique experiences to record moments in time or history. I’ll show you a few of the moments and give some insight or background to put those photographs into context. I don’t plan on going into much detail. As I write this I’m toying with the idea of using this platform as a starting point for a book. I guess this will be a testing ground, and I’ll welcome your feedback. (I wont be allowing comments on this site, but I’ll be cross-linking to a Facebook page where you can give feedback.)
Now a little bit about me. I’m a native Californian. Moved from L.A. County to Orange County. The seed for my photography was planted around the age of 10 or 11 (that’s when my dad gave me a Diana camera). You could say it germinated during middle school; started sprouting in high school and finally blossomed at Cal State Fullerton.
While at CSF I worked on the Daily Titan for four semesters, one as the photo editor. One summer, between my first and second semester on the DT, I worked as an intern photographer with the Anaheim Bulletin (at that time it published six days a week).
Upon graduating from CSF I worked as an intern at the Daily Bulletin (now the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin) in Ontario, CA. The photo editor at the Daily Bulletin asked me to stay after the internship to work as a freelance shooter/lab tech. That lasted for about six months because of budget cutbacks.
Following my stint at the Daily Bulletin I freelanced at The Daily Pilot in Costa Mesa, CA and Golden West Publishing — which eventually became the South Orange County community newspapers for the Orange County Register. Freelancing for Golden West lead to a full-time job.
I spent nine years as a community news photographer for the Orange County Register before moving onto their main newsroom to work on publishing news content on ocregister.com. That role lasted nine years until budget cutbacks forced a reduction in staff.
I consider myself very blessed to have the opportunities of working in the field I chose, and being a part of some awesome teams. If I were taken back in time I’d do it all over again. Except for a few minor tweaks. 😉
