Throwback Thursday – Genaro vs. Oscar

WBO 1995 Lightweight title bout
Oscar De La Hoya and Genaro Hernandez battle it out for the WBO Lightweight title at Caesar’s Place, Las Vegas, Nevada on Sept. 9, 1995.

In 1995 I worked on a story, for the Orange County Register, of Genaro Hernandez’s upcoming fight for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Championship title again Oscar De La Hoya. The match-up was held on Sept. 9 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Although Hernandez grew up in South Los Angeles, he was residing about 35 miles south in Mission Viejo.

In this image Hernandez, right, had just landed a right jab to De La Hoya. For five rounds De La Hoya landed enough punches causing damage Hernandez’s nose making him unable to continue the fight and calling it quits before the bell to start the sixth round.

I have many other images for this story, this particular one is the only one I have that is printed and can scan on a flatbed scanner. As soon as I can digitize the remaining images from that story I’ll post them in an in-depth blog or page.
